Combined Anglo-French Air Strike Hits Daesh Arms Cache in the Syrian region
British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.
The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."
During December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
