Department of Justice Intervenes in Lawsuit to Block the State of California's Congressional Map
The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential further challenges.
