Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such drugs should be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
