2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Transition Follows Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed team members about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a clearer vision.
Ismailer stated that the team is now reimagining the project with a refreshed focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
The news follows a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.
Below is the entire text from Ismailer's memo:
Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re eager for that relationship to endure.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the input to mind and revamped the title with a renewed goal - one that’s ready to fulfill its potential to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of the team. After some time of talks, he comes aboard us on next week.
His management and expertise in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having devoted the past decade and a half creating and leading some of the most popular franchises in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in welcoming him next week. We are all excited to persist observing the evolution of the game in the time to come.
David
Experience of the Incoming Head
The appointee currently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Information and Concept
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year together with a community playtest. Initially, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Challenge the rivals with unique powers, stakes, and tests that evolve every session. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, risk it all, and trust your squad can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."
Project Ethos does not have an official debut schedule or consoles, but enthusiasts can look forward to more updates as creation continues.
