Unconquerable Not Anymore: The Reasons The Indian Test Match Standing Is in Tatters

The Indian cricket team's shocking 0-2 series loss to the Proteas in the recently concluded Test series has left the team reeling.

In the final match, South Africa handed India their heaviest Test defeat by runs, contrary to predictions. It was the Proteas' first series win in the subcontinent in 25 years and India's second home series loss in just 12 months after a 12-year invincible streak.

The momentum built over the last several months has almost disappeared and the prospects of multiple squad members - along with team coach Gautam Gambhir - now hang in the balance.

Initial Hope Fades Quickly

The emerging side's impressive performance in the UK this season, under a different skipper, indicated a successful handover post the almost concurrent exits of stalwarts Ashwin, Sharma, and Kohli.

A facile 2-0 victory over West Indies at the commencement of the home season boosted that belief, till the South Africans came and inflicted a fell blow.

The home side were somewhat unlucky that leader Shubman Gill got injured quickly in the opening Test and was ruled out in the contest. However, that neither explains nor absolves the side of the well below standard showing in each match against South Africa.

Some big reputations suffered, and multiple individuals eyeing lengthy Test careers were exposed as still inadequate - technically or mentally - for the Test cricket.

A Troubling Pattern

This was the second whitewash on home soil suffered by India in just a year. In 2024, underestimated New Zealand had secured a remarkable 3-0 win which effectively cost India a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

The fresh failure to the Proteas risks harming the team's prospects of reaching the final of this edition also.

Previously ranked third in the WTC table before the series, the side have dropped to the fifth spot. Although nine further games are remaining, a majority are against the Aussies. Typically, competing on home turf would be a significant benefit - even when facing the powerful Australians. But the debacles against New Zealand and the Proteas leave little scope for such assurance.

Roots of the Decline

The national team's weakness in Test cricket has been clearly revealed. However, the reason India have struggled so much in Tests on home soil lately is still bewildering.

In the 21st century, India were regarded as unbeatable in Test cricket at home. Under sweltering weather and on pitches that favored spin bowling and suited their batsmen and bowlers, the hosts dominated all comers. The odd series defeat, such as in 2012-13 against the English, was viewed as an anomaly.

Today, the team look to be easy pickings at home.

Against New Zealand in 2024 and the Proteas this year, India were defeated by their own tactics. The surfaces they curated to favor their game failed miserably, as opponents capitalized on them more skillfully, beating India's batsmen and bowlers when it counted the most.

The Core Issue

Certain analysts propose that the Indian team is floundering at home because home surfaces have been altered from spinning tracks to quick wickets to train the squad to do well overseas.

A few mention that the domestic T20 league, in which several international stars play, has taken away the unfamiliarity and challenge home wickets would present to them earlier.

Although there is some truth in each argument, it still does not explain the reason India's performances at home have seen such a sharp fall.

Several Weaknesses

The majority of ex-cricketers point to a multi-faceted challenge, not only one or two factors.

Critics and players have highlighted several failings after the team's disappointing performance to the Proteas: underrating the rivals, lack of preparation, questionable picks, overconfidence, regular alterations of the playing XI, and favoring white-ball over the longer format.

This was clear in the displays of the side.

Members like Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal, of whom great things were anticipated, suffered for their carelessness, while Sudarshan, Reddy, and Dhruv Jurel - who were hoping to secure their spot in the side - fell short in ability and attitude, facing the fallout for their casual attitude.

Just a few - Jadeja, Bumrah, Kuldeep, Mohammed Siraj and Washington Sundar - fulfilled their skill and fame - but not sufficiently to secure victories.

Management Questions

The analysis also included not only the cricketers - team selectors and coaching staff were also questioned, fuelled by distraught fans and outspoken ex-cricketers. Under focus of the criticism was mentor Gautam Gambhir.
